I'm Back - pics from CCX in Slovakia

Ok, so I guess this should be a long post. It probably won't be. Its 1am now, Tuesday night, 5th May and I've been on it with various random, non-glamorous DJ-esque tasks all day. First point of call should be to just get all these photos up, so here goes. I'll post a thoughtful musing textathon later tomorrow perhaps.. So, here's photos from the clubbing complex party in Slovakia - this was ages ago - like February 2007 I think... Taken by the resident photographer - and apologies for the massive number of photos of me - an internetty shrine I do not want this page to become - although maybe its too late... ;-)

OK, so yeah, most of those are pretty boring, but good photos, so you might as well see them. And I'm sure my web hosts will love the extra bandwidth... From what i can remember it was a good party, I was supposed to go to the Ukraine the next day, but the flight routings were ultra-lame so I only did the one gig that weekend. i think i prefer it that way - its pretty harsh doing 2 euro gigs in a weekend unless the connections work out well - you can be stuck in Frankfurt airport for god knows how long, and probably have to wake up at some evil hour in order to make it. Not fun. Even with free coffee... ;-)

Photos from Back door Bambi In Miami

I stayed over in Miami for 2 months this year, March and April - so I could be there for the WMC (Winter Music Conference) and then just tour the US at the weekends... The only days I was really able to go out in Miami were midweeks so I ended up eventually figuring out a fabulous midweek clubbing diary - although alas, the Back Door Bambi party is no more - for now... On vacation and back soon so they tell me... Here's a few photos from a really good night we all had there while I was in town, I guess this must have been during WMC or the week after because Jen Lasher and Wildchild were in town - but we had an ace time... I think I was at this party every week (apart from my tonsilitis week) the whole time i was in Miami, and it was glorious - so big shouts out to Carmel and Stefan and everyone involved in the party - and thanks for having me... Indeanapoliss

Ok, a million pics from here - but fun ones, all courtesy of Jefa Sheeham (Batgrrl66@yahoo.com) Had a fun gig in Indeanapolis, minus nascars etc, but only 1 hr to sleep after the show. Fun nonetheless. oh and the show was hosted by MEOW from the suicidegirls.com website. Cute.

Blu Mar Ten is made up of founding members Leo Wyndham and Chris Marigold, with new addition Michael Tognarelli.

After meeting through a mutual friend in 1995 and both having a musical past, Chris & Leo clicked immediately and started to write music. Leo had written around 200 hardcore and house tunes over the previous few years, while Chris had been DJ-ing on pirate radio and at raves.

1995 was an incredibly exciting time for music, particularly drum & bass with the rise of Fabio and Bukems Speed and Goldies Metalheadz. The days were spent writing all day in the studio then nights spent going on pilgrimages to Hoxton Square and the West End to hear the professionals at work.

The first track to be released was The Fountain / Lunar in Feb 1997 on the now defunct Way Out Records. The track received acclaim across the board appearing on numerous big name compilations and was named by Fabio as his tune of the year. This was closely followed by the duos remix of Erykah Badu's classic On & On for MCA, which travelled into the mainstream top 10. On the heels of these releases Blu Mar Ten were offered a long-term deal by LTJ Bukem's Good Looking Records, which was eagerly taken up. This partnership saw a long chain of releases on the label including features on the Logical Progression, Earth and Progression Sessions LPs, tracks on Good Lookings partner labels and a dedicated artist EP and Blu Mar Ten artist compilation LP was also released

Unfortunately, all good things come to an end and in early 2001 Blu Mar Ten and Good Looking parted company, but despite this have remained friends. Since then, Blu Mar Ten has blossomed into a variety of musical styles. Taking a step back from drum & bass, they have produced breaks for Rennie Pilgrem's TCR and Danny Macmillan's In-flight labels, 2 step garage for Lime, banging house for Guidance recordings and left field downbeat for the Big Chill and Naked Music to name but a few. They have also taken on remix duties for Erykah Badu again, Terry Lee Brown Junior, Jakatta, The Ananda Project and Annie Lennox.

Casting their net wider in this way won Blu Mar Ten recognition from a diverse set of DJs such as Tom 'The Jedi' Middleton, Felix da Housecat, Ben Watt, Carl Cox, Lee Burridge, Erol Alkan, Howie B and Mary Anne Hobbs.

September 2003 saw the long overdue release of the first proper Blu Mar Ten album, 'The Six Million Names of God' on Exceptional Records. The LP represents work from 1997 through to 2003 and focused more on the downbeat side of the duo than the dance floor. Featuring collaborations with Blame (720 Recordings / Charged), Nor Elle (Plastic City) and Fink (Ninjatune), the album is packed with layer upon layer of lush sounds and surprising interludes.

In 2004 Chris & Leo were joined by Michael who has known Chris since 1993. The pair had met in Manchester where, as a teenager, Michael had been working in Eastern Bloc and Spin Inn record shops alongside Marcus Intalex and Sappo. Michael joined the duo bringing an emphasis on harder beats and a more driving sound, and continues to produce darker drum & bass on his own.

2006 & 2007 are busy years for Blu Mar Ten. A return to their drum & bass roots sees a string of 12" smashers hitting the drum & bass scene on labels as diverse as 'Hospital Records', 'Nookie's 'Phuzion Records', Friction's 'Shogun Audio', vintage label 'Basement Recordings', John B's 'Tangent Recordings', the mighty 'Renegade Hardware', Subject 13's 'Vibez Recordings' and Doc Scott's legendary '31 Records', with Dj support across the scene to match. Amongst these tunes is the now mythical 'Shadowboxing Remix'. Originally made as a one-off just to DJ out, the hype surrounding this rework of Doc Scott's classic has created a splash in the D&B community with a previously unexpected release now out on the loose.

2007 sees the arrival of the eagerly anticipated new album 'Black Water' which retains the lushness of previous work while adopting a much more direct approach in it's sound.

BETA 018 - Release Date June 2007

A: Castor - Axe To Grind

A: Castor - Nothing Can Break Us

2 monster dark rollers... Nuff said.

Castor (Keith Ross) began pursuing production and dj endevours back in '97. Being rooted in hip hop and downtempo, he started out working more on turntablism and slower bpm tracks . He was introduced to drum and bass by a friend, and soon got the itch. He and then partner in crime Simpplex started releasing darker, dancefloor aimed tracks on a small Phoenix based record label. Receiving support from well known U.S. djs he was inspired to push his abilities in the studio and take it as far as he could.

Making a name for himself as a dj in the U.S. was another catalyst for his ever climbing goals and aspirations. Castor has played both coasts as well held residencies in his local scene. The ever versatile producer has made everything from liquid, to dark, to minimal, to electro, to heavy dancefloor killers, as well as other non dnb projects.

Castor teamed up with another Phoenix producer--Vector burn. Their collaborations have been sought after by numerous record labels and played by heavy hitter djs. In '05 they gave their project a name "The Riot". Their music is politically charged and suited for a high energy dancefloor setting. Forthcoming releases will be found on labels such as Renegade Hardware, Beta recordings, Renegade recordings, Barcode, Habit recordings, Vibez recordings as well as more in the works. 2007 is looking good, watch this space.

Back...

Hi there...

So yeah, back from a long one in America - I rented an apartment on South Beach in Miami for almost 2 months and used it as a tour base - did gigs every Thurs/Fri/Sat then came back and collapsed in a heap on the beach for the week. Well, apart from when it was raining or when I had tonsilitis ;-)

All in all it was a pretty good trip - don't think I'd stay away for as long as that again, 2 months really was just a bit too long - and it's hard to get any other work done that far away from my office, especially when I only had DIAL UP internet in the apartment! Haha! Didn't even think that still existed... Imagine checking your myspace. EVERY DAY. On that slow a system. All the spam has got to me on there recently too - doing my head in - I switched it so all comments just went up, but then decided to fight back - I've been militantly reporting every spam message and all the fake phising gits etc this week. Won't last long I'm sure. I don't know why they don't just put in security checks like on facebook where you have to type in those random characters every now and then. Anyway, rant over.

Well, its good to be back, I'm still working through all the piles of admin that built up while I was gone and the mountain of demo CDs too. Have had a few builders over this week, my garden was supposed to have been landscaped while I was away - but all that got done was the plan - which is great, but its dissappointing to come back to no visible change. I'm hoping it can get done before the summer is over, again - and before my Birthday. Which I doubt. At least I have a nice park nearby as a pretend garden ;-)

Discovered a cool website recently, which you guys probably already know about, but its www.newmixes.com - basically a really good spot to download underground dance music radio shows as mp3s - stuff like the specialist Radio 1 shows etc - and its great to just whack em on the iPod before a run. I find if i don't have something fresh to listen to when I go for a run or the gym I get sooooo bored, so yeah, nice to have some new ammo...

Been preparing my stuff today for the gig in Prague tomorrow - I'm playing a rare, non-DnB set so I'm pretty excited - I get to play lots of electrohouse, techno, a bit of 80s and italo disco maybe. I'm going to try to ask them to record it, so fingers crossed. Either way I'll be recording some more Redux shows next week and getting back on it with the Podcasts too...

Oh, in other news... I've added a clip of a new track to my myspace music player "Mr. Freud" its called - so go have a look... myspace.com/johnbbeta

I'm working on a new track with the fabulous Kirsty Hawkshaw too, its called 'Connected'. The DnB mix is done and you might have been lucky enough to have heard it on the tour dates so far - its supermegaTrancey... I'm doing a radio mix next week then starting on the 4/4 Trance and Electrohouse remixes, which will probably be the ones that go commercial, if we're lucky... It's a great song so I don't see why not... Clips coming soon...

Ok, that's enough for now, I'm off to burn some CDs for teh weekend and maybe go to see 28 weeks later the movie - I've been having nightmares about it all week jsut from the trailers... ;-)
